What is the difference between line-editing and copy-editing?

Line editing is an in depth and comprehensive process that focuses on writing style and language use at the sentence and paragraph level including the flow of ideas, transition elements, tone, and style. A line editor focuses on the content and on the way you use language to communicate in order to make suggestions for improvement. Line editing can also include attention to the structure and organization of your writing. This option is comprehensive and therefore takes more time. Line editing may naturally include some attention to technical errors, but if it is determined that more detailed copy editing is needed, the client will be informed accordingly. The editor will provide line by line visible corrections on the document as well as feedback detailing the necessary structural or content changes.

Copy editing addresses the more technical aspects of your writing, including errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax etc. It does not include any attention to writing style, language use or organization. If it is determined that the document needs some line editing before it can be copy edited, the client will be informed accordingly. The editor will provide line by line visible corrections and revision suggestion on the document.
